Mantle photo ended with baffling price
Posted by Chris

mantlebentbat.jpgOn a seperate note for this Tuesday, Henry Yee had a bunch of killer original photos that ended last night on eBay. The biggest suprise out of the whole bunch was this Mickey Mantle batting cage photo: CLICK HERE.

I honestly didn't think this piece would go for more than a few hundred bucks.

What am I missing here?

6K++??? What the heck!??

Hi Chris,

From the looks of the bidding history, I have my suspicions on "what the heck" is going on here. After the price reached 300 bucks, only 2 bidders kept bidding. I know most folks snipe, but these days it's rare to see to 2 guys go back and forth like this without either one of them sniping. Just a hunch, but I think the seller has a lot more of these and wants to drive up the perceived market price, and now he can say in every auction he lists that this photo sold for over 6700 bucks.

I don't have time to follow this stuff like you do, but it would be interesting to read a follow up to this blog down the road after the seller lists more of these.

Ned,
I totally hear you, but this seller is Henry Yee. He is one of the utmost experts on vintage photography. His auctions have quite the following and he is very well respected, so I doubt any funny stuff is going on here.
That said, if I didn't know who the seller was, I would have had the exact same feelings as you.

I still can't believe that photo got that much though. To me it wasn't very attractive.

As always, thanks for your comments and opinions,
chris

Ned,
I left Yee a voice mail to ask him about the Mantle photo and he has yet to return the call. I will let you know what his thoughts are on why it sold of so much if he gets back to me.

Should be interesting.
