WILL BONDS MEMORABILIA BE SAVED?
Posted by Chris

stern.jpgI never thought I would say it, but Barry Bonds is three home runs away from breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record and he isn’t the most talked about story in sports this week. Heck, he isn’t even the second most talked about story.

Barry can thank the heavens that Mike Vick’s latest dog troubles and former NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s mob ties are both a hotter topic than Bonds’ home run chase and the steroid scandal. Bonds looks like a saint compared to these jokers.
I don’t think this means that Bonds memorabilia is going to skyrocket by any means, but I will say that I think his lack of being in the spotlight isn’t a bad thing for Bonds memorabilia sales and future sales.

There’s still plenty of time to put your guess on the Gavel Chat Mastro Honus Wagner card contest… Remember you will have a chance to win the 2007 factory sealed Topps baseball set if you are the closest to the realized price.

Remember 1998 and how much hype there was for the Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire home run race? Non baseball fans even got caught up in the drama. How times have changed.

Now in 2007, Barry Bonds' run at the Hammer's Magic #755 cannot even maintain the audience and attention of a large number of hardcore baseball fans.

The collective yawn and shrug speaks volumes. The sentiment is almost like "Let's get this over with and move on."

If he stays healthy, Alex Rodriguez will be knocking at Bonds' door in a few years asking that he hand over the Home Run Crown anyway. I wonder if AROD can take that record before Barry even gets into the Hall of Fame.

Yeah but how long before we start hearing about whatever A-Rod has been taking all these years. Bonds is the poster child for peformance enhancing drugs, but most other players are doing the same thing. I don't condone what Barry has done, but I am interested in the home record...just as I was interested in the extremely puffed up McGwire and Sosa in '98 (and so were all of you).

Good point Scott.

Actually, is there any big home run hitter in the game today who is not tainted by some suspicion? As a baseball fan, I feel like 99% of the baseball steroid truth has been untold to date, much of it will always be untold. We have not even scratched the surface with the pitchers who have used steroids.

I try to reserve judgement but have my suspicions about the users. Wait until some of these guys bodies start breaking down before they are 50 years old. Like I mentioned in a previous post, an athlete's retirement from a pro sport does not necessarily equate with a stoppage of their non medical steroid use. I have little sympathy for athletes who ONLY BECOME REMORSEFUL WHEN CAUGHT.

The wake up call for me was Rafael Palmeiro.
