WILL THE MITCHELL REPORT HURT MEMORABILIA SALES?
Posted by Chris

clemens.jpgWell, by now you have all heard the names that were listed on the Mitchell Report. We all knew about Barry Bonds, but guys like Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte, may have surprised more than a few people.

There was even an Internet hoax that was stirring around names like Albert Pujols as being involved in using steroids. That particular accusation was squashed rather quickly, thank God.

So, what are these findings going to do to memorabilia sales? I have a feeling it is going to seriously hurt prices. Bonds and Clemens are not going to be let into the Hall of Fame any time soon and memorabilia of Palmeiro, Sosa and McGwire is already proof that sales will suffer.

Taking a brief timeout from his holiday sale, head man of Mastro Auctions, Doug Allen, already chimed in with his thoughts to Gavel Chat about the Mitchell Report's potential affect on memorabilia sales:

“Overall we have seen the newer material suffer based on the allegations of Steroid abuse by Barry Bonds. The current news will definitely have an additional impact on players that were not previously implicated such as Roger Clemens.”

There’s no denying it. Who the heck is going to pay top dollar for a game-worn Clemens jersey right now?

Chris,

Did you see that Canseco was in NY for the press conference and was not allowed into the press release. He was told that it was for media members only.

Afterwards, he made public statements that he couldn't believe ARod was not a part of the Mitchell Report. Canseco has always said he had some dirt on him, but Alex still has a "good name" for now. I have a feeling he has enough "smarts" to obtain this crap through multiple channels, before it actually gets to him. That is, if he's even using steriods. I hope not, but he used to be a thin, lanky kid back in his early days and now has developed into a home-run hitting muscle machine!

I have my doubts on the guy. Pujols as well. He's a beast!!

On another topic, the Cowboys will be coming to town next year and we will be heading to Seattle. That Cowboys game should be a good one at Lambeau!

Happy Holidays,
Ned

Ned,
I have a feeling that we haven't heard may hear about more guys like Pujols or AROD... Man, I hope not though. The hobby doesn't need that.
The funny thing is at first Canseco was looked at kind of like an idiot for writing his book and naming all those names and he was dead on with a lot of them, if not all of them.

I haven't seen the Packers schedule for next season yet, but it will be nice to have the Cowboys in our home stadium. Hope it's in late Dec.

I hope we get the cowboys in January 2008. At full strength, I like our chances.

Gosh, John. I hope you're right, but there's something about their place that messes with Brett's head. We'll see.

I have already heard some collectors who are going to try to take Roger Clemens off Hall of Fame items that people jumped the gun with and got signed.

The funny thing is that Roger will be put in the Hall anyway.

Chris - Great Blog! (And that's coming from a Cowboys fan too!)

I think the prices for Clemens and others will take a short-term hit but will rebound in the long run. I think the price history of Pete Rose memorabilia and cards tell us that prices will bounce back. His '63 rookie took a hit when he was banned, but it has come back since then and he's obviously still not in the hall.
