Talking LSD, Steroids and Baseball with Dock Ellis
Posted by Chris

dock.jpgJust got off the phone with former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis. Dock was very outspoken in his interview, which was exclusive to SCD, and we talked about the new ball that American Memorabilia is offering, which Ellis scripted the interesting inscription "I threw a no hitter on LSD."

Yep, you read it right. Only a few months after Pete Rose wrote the inscription where he admitted to betting on baseball, on a ball, this new inscription is being introduced to collectors.
When I first saw that this ball was being sold, I thought that Ellis and AMI may take a lot of heat for it, so I wanted to get Ellis' thoughts on this.

"It never crossed my mind that it's not the right thing to put on a ball," Ellis said. "That's what I did. It's already been publicized year, after year, after year. I put it on a ball because it's memorabilia."

Ellis also went into other topics, such as his daily ritual of taking bennies and greenies, while pitching.

He also was very opinionated on the steroid scandal and what has been going on in Major League baseball.

Ellis feels the steroid scandal "is a joke," and that steroids don't help players perform. He feels that a player has to have "skill," and that is far more important to their performances than steroids.

Dock Ellis[1].jpgHe also mentioned how many players were junkies during the days he played and MLB never said a word about it.
Eillis also went into the entire story of how he mistakenly LSD when he had to pitch against San Diego. We all know how that turned out. He threw the no-hitter and the Pirates won 2-0 (even thought he walked eight batters).
I asked him if he thought the drug had anything to do with his performance and if it helped him focused etc.

He told me that it did not and he gave credit to the "baseball gods," as it was just time in their eyes for a no-hitter.

I am still going through the interview tape, so hopefully I will have some more interesting tidbits to share.

As for the ball, you can get one from AMI at the price of $175. According to Dock, he will be signing a limited number of these, "between 50-100."

He might now be the only Pittsburgh Sports Figure on Drugs

Actually, Dock Ellis has been sober for more than 20 years now... He has gone through all the proper treatment years ago and as part of his treatment he came clean about what he used and that's when the story of him throwing the infamous no-hitter became public.

The way today's Padres hit, Dock Ellis could still no-hit them, whether he was tripping or not.

I'm wondering if Ellis could come and close a few games for us.

I'm surprised to hear that he said that steroids in baseball "is a joke". I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when a player like Sosa can jump from the mid 30's to the mid 60's in HR's in a season, that's no increased "skill" if you know what I mean. I think Doc needs to rethink his stance on that particular topic and also to quit being a sellout to AMI. Good for him, he threw a no-hitter on LSD. So go and brag about it and get publicity so our youth who may not know about this can now learn about more about drugs and the losers that use them during America's pastime. Now that's a joke!

I doubt that there are going to be any young pitchers out there trying LSD with the expectation of throwing a no hitter or working their way to the Big Leagues. I have to give even today's youth more credit than that.

As far as the inscription, I think most fans were aware of the LSD no hitter already. It was one of the quirkiest no hitters in baseball history. It was actually commemmorated on the cachet pictured in Chris' blog, and that was issued 12 years ago.

Interestingly, Dock became a Certified Addictions Counselor after his playing career concluded. He is actually a pretty good guy who has dedicated much of his adult life to helping those fighting addiction out in Los Angeles. Anyone who has worked with this population knows how challenging that field can be.

I have met Dock on a few occasions, he definately is not afraid to speak his mind . He has somewhat mellowed and is a bit more affable than I expected , should be an interesting interview. Dock wanted to pitch in the first ever baseball game at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh but Manager Danny Murtaugh slated someone else for the start. Dock threw a tantrum and later, threw the first pitch ever to Ty Cline . Murtaugh had relented and gave him the start.....

I agree with some of his opinions, disagree with others, but he can be counted on for a lively conversation once he gets rollin'.

By the way, Dock Ellis was in Pittsburgh yesterday. A group of fans staged a walk out during yesterday's Pirates game, frustrated with the worst 15 year stretch in the 120 year old franchise's history. Almost every move this club has made in the last 15 years has been a complete debacle, from the top to the bottom of the organization and everything in between.

Dock agreed to speak at the rally supporting the fans who were demanding more accountability from this organization, which may be the worst run organization currently in all of the major four sports.
