PSA announces half-grade designation
Posted by Chris

ruth12.jpgThe full story is on our home page, but I just thought I’d touch on this subject a bit. Half grades? … hmm.

SGC uses them, Beckett does too. PSA has jumped on board in 2008.

I wonder how many PSA collectors will resubmit cards in hopes of getting their card bumped up another half point. If I had a really solid 1952 Topps Mantle that was graded an 8, I probably would be resubmitting it.

What will this do to values? How will it affect the Set Registry?
According to my understanding, if you resubmit a card already graded by PSA, it can’t be dropped a half grade.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

PSA - Welcome to the 21st Century. This just in... PSA is also now using electricty and running water in their buildings.

Joking aside, I think PSA does a great job (although I prefer Beckett with card grading). I really like PSA ticket grading and protection.

Hello Chris, Well I guess the 30 million + cards previously graded by PSA will all have to be re-subbmitted to PSA, because all of them could be under graded. Now that would be a nice little profit for for them for being inept in there grading practices all these years. Now if they want to change the way they do buisness, and screwing up everybody's collections, they should at least get it right, and be the forerunners, and not the followers. By this I mean they should go to the tenth's or even the hundreth's. That would tell everybody exactly what their collectible really grades. No more 'high end' 8's, or 'high end' 7.5's. Say you get a card back that grades an 8. Technically it could be an 8.1 to an 8.4. If it gets a, 8.5, it might be 8.6 to an 8.9. Look at the gap, and imagine the price diffences created. Now if they went with hundreth's, you could get a card graded say an 8.77.Imagine how much more it would be worth compared to the same card graded an 8.33. My point is, if PSA is going to make such an announcement, do it uniquely, and create something new. It make's the so called industry leaders look like a bunch of copycats that did'nt know what they were doing to begin with! Thanks for the opportunity to vent- Jim Baran.

Jim - I think that's brilliant. I work in marketing and one of the most basic lessons is to provide a 'dramatic difference.' PSA isn't providing that at all. They are just showing they are late in the game. Chris - Great post.
