Gavel Chat goes on the road
Posted by Chris
Tomorrow morning I'll be driving to the Premier Collectible Conference & Exhibition in Rosemont, Ill. Ryan Friedman and Mastro Auctions have combined efforts to form the inaugural PCCE, and it should be a very unique experience. Not only is there a card and memorabilia show during the event, but there will be expert speakers on hand the entire weekend. There won't be any speakers tomorrow, but I know that there will be some major announcements that will be going on and I will be sure to get photos and comments from everyone involved. Friday should be a busy day for me, as I will be trying to attend all of the panel discussions and speeches. CLICK HERE to see the list of panel speakers. Lou Lampson, Dave Bushing, Jimmy Spence and Kevin Keating will all be on hand to give their thoughts. Should be pretty cool.

Tom Riccio releases O.J. book
Posted by Chris
Attached to the blog is a press conference that Universal Rarities Auction's former owner Tom Riccio recently conducted to promote this new book about the O.J. Simpson Las Vegas hotel bust that was set up last year.
For those who don't remember the story, Riccio set up the meeting for Simpson to get back his memorabilia from a crazed fan and when they conducted the meeting at the Palace Station casino/hotel in Sin City, all hell broke loose.
I got the chance to meet Riccio a few times during my time at American Memorabilia and I will tell you that he is quite the character. I actually am looking forward to checking out this book. According to the press conference, Riccio said that the book will contain other tidbits about the hobby and not just the Simpson garbage.
I just read an article in Trade Fax about the book and it has an excerpt from Riccio saying that he is "out to make as much money as I can off this incident." Very classy. Gotta love America!

REA server gets hacked
Posted by Chris
Well, I'm back from my vacation. My friend got married to a wonderful girl on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and all I have to show from my trip is a really bad sore throat, one week less in my PTO account at work and a decent tan. It was fun though, and good to get a break from everything. I was surprised to find that Mexican pharmacies are able to sell over-the-counter medication, from Viagra to Anabolic Steroids. I couldn't pass up the chance to take a snap shot of the steroids sign for the blog. I guess this is how some ballplayers probably got the goods back in the day before BALCO and the more scientific HGH stuff. *************
While I was away some pretty interesting news happened with Robert Edward Auctions website. Here is an email that was sent to the auction house's database: The REA auction is back up! Our auction system has been down for the past 24 hours. When we went down, we thought it was a natural hardware issue. All mechanical systems (including cars, computers, etc) have the potential eventually to break down due to natural causes and require repair or replacement. While the hosting company was working on replacing the servers in the middle of the night, we were surprised to learn from the managing hosting service company responsible for our web site (and thousands of others) that this was not a natural occurrence. It was an intentional, malicious, sophisticated, and extremely deliberate criminal attack on our servers with the intention of destroying them. This is a 100% certainty. The emergency security team of the managing hosting company is taking this very seriously. All proper reports are being filed. They are also addressing the problem for us so that this will not happen again. If we understand what we have been told correctly, it may be that the hardware destroying event that we experienced was intended to occur at a slightly later date. Fortunately, this has been addressed now, at this early date. There will be no further statement about this matter at this time because this is a serious criminal issue, and one that is in the process of being investigated and pursued in every possible manner.
As a related aside, REA is always ready to make decisions instantly to deal with any unusual events or situations relating to the auction that might arise in what we think is the most reasonable and intelligent manner possible. If our computer system had been attacked and brought down on the closing day, or the day before, for example, we would have simply moved the closing date of the auction to a few days or a week later. Similarly, if there was a major catastrophic event like 9-11 that occurred on these days, we would also reschedule the final auction closing date. We are always able to respond at a moment's notice to any event that should occur in what we think is the most reasonable and intelligent manner possible to ensure the integrity and success of the auction.
We put the auction up early this year, so we will actually be up and taking bids for a much longer period of time in 2008 than ever before. We're sorry that we were down for a day and we appreciate your understanding! ***************
I talked with owner Rob Lifson today and he said he has no clue who did this, but there is an investigation underway. Thankfully for Rob, the auction was in its early stages and really wasn't affected much. Also, I received my REA catalog in the mail while I was gone and it is a monster... By far the biggest I have ever received and it is not just quantity. Very quality stuff in there. I wonder why (if) someone would target a sports memorabilia auction house. Very odd and the first time I have ever heard of something like this in the hobby.

Gavel Chat is done
Posted by Chris
Well, only for a week, as I will be away from the computer all next week. I am going to be
vacationing in an area much more warmer than Wisconsin and will be back
the following Monday and ready to really heat up the blogs. There are
plenty of auctions that will be under way by then and I'm sure there will be lots of
news surrounding them. **************
Talk about a classy auction. CLICK HERE The eBay seller with the username "lexibell" is offering a nude vintage negative of the Say Hey Kid. Along with the negative, the winning bidder will receive the rights to reproduce, or publish this beauty wherever he or she pleases. Come on Playgirl, here's your chance to gain some new readership. Wow... Sometimes, eBay sellers are way over the top.

Pictured here is my buddy and "near-hobby-legend," Joel Alpert with his lovely new fiancee and former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Mike Hartenstine. Joel accompanied Mike at the Sun-Times free autograph signing table last weekend. I actually met Mr. Alpert while living in Las Vegas a few years ago when he used to be a terror at the poker tables. It would be nice if he would participate and comment on Gavel Chat more, because he can be quite entertaining and knowledgeable at the same time. That's one of the reasons why I love attending these major shows. So many old faces I haven't seen in years. I can't wait til Sportsfest and the National.

Someone please email me if you know what this lady was trying to say
Posted by Chris
Don't even ask me how I stumbled upon this Youtube video, but I got kind of a little chuckle out of it. Bless this lady's heart for trying to explain the ins and outs of card collecting, but she really lost me during this segment. In auction news, Robert Edward Auctions' sale opened for bidding today. As always Rob Lifson offers plenty of Cooperstown-worthy relics and a mixture of other sports pieces in his annual sale. This is the time of year when many major auctions start to appear. It will really be interesting to see if sales suffer due to the state of the economy. So far I haven't seen too big of a decrease in realized prices, but this slew of Spring sales will be the true test.

PSA changes labels – slightly, and SCP gears up for big sale
Posted by Chris
A few of the detail-minded PSA Registry members emailed me this week to see if I knew anything about the new layout of the company’s slab flips… I had my own assumptions, but wanted to ask PSA president Joe Orlando what actually was the reasoning and last night he called with his response. Just as I thought, it had something to do with the PSA’s new “half-grade” system: Orlando: “The reason that we changed the labels, is after getting some feedback from the hobby, we decided that this would be a way to distinguish between cards that have been graded after the half-point system and before. The one caveat to that is that cards are sent in for review for the half point with the old-style labels with the old-style holders, because we are concerned with the efficiency of the process and unnecessary waste we do not crack out cards that do not change or that we don't feel have a chance at changing. Basically it was in response to some of the hobbyists that wanted to distinguish between cards that have been graded under the new system versus the old system with that one caveat.” *****************
I just checked out SCP Auctions’ Barry Bonds No. 762 home run ball auction on their site. The ball is currently at $146,410. This piece is so interesting, and it is such a unique situation because Bonds could technically still play. I'm very curious to see what it sells for. Talk about a six-figure lottery ticket. In other SCP/Sotheby’s news, the auction-house giant is holding its major sale that ends April 24. In addition to the sweet Crack Jack cards that are pictured below, there are pieces from the Dr. Richard Angrist Collection and lots that came from heavy weight boxer Joe Frazier. CLICK HERE to read the full preview that was published recently in Sport Collectors Digest.

Montana and Kim sitting in a Heritage’s auction – K I S S I N G
Posted by Chris
I usually don’t feel weird about items I see in an auction, but in Heritage’s upcoming Signature sale I was left feeling a little odd, kind of like I just watched a cheesy soap opera or something. CLICK HERESeems like HA’s consignor somehow got some really cool, early Joe Montana stuff, and in the batch was this lot of hand-written love letters. Hmm… I don’t think I’ll be going after this lot. **************
After yesterday’s blog, it seems like Gavel Chat readers wanted a more thorough Sun-Times Show update, so here it goes: Pictured here is my buddy Dennis Jose, owner of Chicagotix.com. He looks pretty darn happy in the photo and he should. His table was flooded with people the entire show, as they sifted through his selection of significant game tickets. Former Global autograph authenticator Justin Priddy had a booth set up promoting his new company, Ace Authentic. According to a worker at his table, Priddy will be the only authenticator as of right now certifying autos for the new venture. Speaking of Global, GAI had a table set up and were offering different specials. It seems like the company is back on track after the issued they faced a few months ago. Beckett was passing out their new magazine’s, which featured multi-sports pricing in the same publication, something Tuff Stuff has been doing for years. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s blog. I'll be getting a PSA label update from Joe Orlando. It appears the grading company has subtly changed the layout of the labels on its graded cards. I think it was just done in order to fit the half grades on the flips in a more eye-appealing fashion, but Joe will be calling me to address my questions.

Joseph Addai reads Gavel Chat?
Posted by Chris
So, I just got back from the big Sun-Times show that took place in Chicago over the weekend. This was my first show that I attended this year and it went very well. We got a lot of good feedback about our website, Tuff Stuff’s new look and a lot of people had very kind words about Gavel Chat. To my surprise, I found out that one of my biggest readers was Colts running back Joseph Addai. Here’s a picture of Addai telling me that he wanted to give me his watch (which had to have had at least 1000 diamonds in it) as long as I continued to blog every day and if I would lay off the gameusedforum.com members. Alright, Addai doesn’t really read this stuff, but I did have a great chat with him about the hobby and public signings. He told me how awesome it was to sit right next to guys like Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith and Marshall Faulk and to get advice from some of his heroes. He looked like a kid in a candy store chatting it up with the two legendary running backs. Addai also said that he has started collecting his own memorabilia, like game balls and jerseys. He didn’t start collecting this stuff until now, but by doing shows like Sun-Times, I think it has kind of opened his eyes up to how neat this stuff really is. Like I said, the autograph lineup was pretty darn good. Recent Hall of Fame inductees, Goose Gossage and Dick Williams were on hand and even George “Shotgun” Shuba made his way to the SCD booth to chat with me about his time on the Dodgers and how tough and great of a teammate Jackie Robinson was. There were many attendees at the event who commented on my recent blog about different forum members and their rants. It was nice to get their views and I got to pick their brains a bit on what their views were of the hobby, and some actions on message boards that may or may not be appropriate. Not to jump around topics too much, but I just want to reinforce how refreshing it is to see how guys like Adrian Peterson, Charles Woodson, George Brett and others who chatted with fans at the show. These guys seemed to genuinely enjoy spending time with the fans. I know that it isn’t cheap to get a signature from these guys, but all the fans I talked to had a great time. Andre Rison was a no-show and left some Packers fans out in the cold, who wanted to get their Super Bowl XXXI helmets signed. I also wanted to chat with Bad Moon about his days in Green Bay, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. ************ By the way... We should have our SportsFest autograph lineup announced soon. Names I am hearing that may be there are guys like Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Desmond Howard and a ton of others that I can't think of right now. I will keep everyone updated when I hear something permanent.

SCDA's Florida T206 Find revisited
Posted by Chris
I don't even remember the exact year, but during my stint as a card grader with the "short-lived," SCD Authentic, we were fortunate enough to grade "The Florida T206 Find." The reason I am writing about this now, is because I recently stumbled upon some of the images from this awesome collection. If you don't remember the story behind this, what basically happened is a man in Florida bought a house, and found this enormous hoard of basically untouched T206 cards in the attic, including the Sherry Magee ultra-scarce error card. Mr. Mint eventually landed the collection for one of his auctions and the rest is history. I remember when people first heard about this collection, and that we were the grading company who the man chose, there were many skeptics and people who accused us of staging this "find." I laughed at that because I met the guy and got to examine the cards first hand. I've never seen a group this large and this clean as these T206s were. These images brought back a lot of memories for me. I wish I would have been able to own some of these gems. I'm off to the Sun Times show Friday. I am hoping to get a chance to chat with Adrian Peterson, who will be signing autographs. It would be cool to get his take on collectibles and to see if he collects any of his own material. I will at least get some good images to share with Gavel Chat readers. I will hopefully have something from the show posted by Monday.

Pete Rose is pretty web savy
Posted by Chris
I saw this on the Sports Locker blog: It seems Pete Rose is a pretty high-tech dude. CLICK HERE. It looks like you can pay to have Pete call you via the web and he will sign an item and write whatever inscription you want on it. This is definitely something different, but I don't mind the idea. It's worth a look. ************** This weekend I will at the Sun Times show in Rosemont, Illinois. I will attempt to blog from the show and hopefully will be able to interview some interesting people. Adrian Peterson is the headlining signer, so I am hoping to get a chance to chat with him. I haven't been to a big show since the National last year, so I am really looking forward to this one.

How do people fall for this?
Posted by Chris
I have a feeling that by the time Gavel Chat readers see this CLICK HERE eBay will have removed the auction listing, but try to check it out anyway. It looks like the seller of this Clemente rookie decided to doctor a PSA label, and make what looks like a mid-grade card, look like a PSA 8. The thing that baffles me is that bids have already exceeded $700. How gullible are people? I snagged the image just in case it gets pulled early. *************
Now time to blog about yesterday's pot I ended up stirring. Yesterday's entry was meant to call out some people and raise some important issues. My intent was not to put down gameusedforum.com, which I think is great for the hobby by the way, or any of the well-meaning members who participate on the message board. I made my points in yesterday's blog and stick to them. For the original man who photomatched the Namath helmet, I never meant to note that you didn't do a good job on what you discovered. My point was that many people were making it sound like Heritage acted irresponsibly by going ahead to promote the Namath helmet before it was ever authenticated. I just wanted to make sure that people knew how Heritage's entire consigning process worked and that its third-party authenticator never saw the helmet until this week. I want to thank the two gentlemen from the board who called me with their concerns, as I genuinely enjoyed our conversations.

There is nothing worse than a guy who talks the talk but doesn’t … well, you know
Posted by Chris
I’m the first person to say that I love when Gavel Chat readers comment on a topic, or email me about anything they feel is important in the hobby. I don’t want to single out Rick Asten, who posted this comment on yesterday’s blog:
3/18/2008 11:41:55 AM (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-04:00) Chris, from what we're hearing now that helmet was likely never used by Namath during ANY game, let alone the Super Bowl. Shame on Heritage for not checking facts before going public with this. Remind me again, what exactly is that 20% buyer's penalty for? R.A. But it triggered something inside of me, as to how silly some people have reacted to Heritage’s Joe Namath “Super Bowl III” helmet. Rick commented with the following sentence: Shame on Heritage for not checking facts before going public with this. Click here to read a thread about this topic from gameusedforum.com I want to start by saying, I am a huge fan of gameusedforum.com and have been a board member pretty much since it started years ago, but some of you guys are way out of line, and some are simply cowards. Most of you are great, but some of you are instigators and are bad for the hobby. The Namath HelmetI called Heritage today to get the lowdown on what actually took place with this piece and how they made the mistake of offering it to the public without even authenticating it. Here is what happened. Also, keep in mind I worked at a major auction house for two years and everything the Heritage official told me is absolutely the same way my former job processes were ran. Before every auction is “live” on Heritage’s site, from the moment a consignor’s package is received and entered into their inventory, the entire cataloging process is traceable on its site. Keep in mind, descriptions and images can change and nothing is set in stone until the auction’s start. See the screen grab below: In the case of the Namath helmet, it came with great written provenance. It came with a letter from Namath, which claimed the helmet was from SB III, the helmet had a very significant inscription (which had been authenticated by PSA/DNA and JSA) and it also came with a signed football, which added to the claim that this helmet was indeed Broadway Joe’s SB III gamer. So, taking all that into consideration, the folks at Heritage decided to run some ads highlighting this “great” lot. Keep in mind, Lou Lampson, its game-used equipment authenticator wasn’t scheduled to come in to their Dallas offices until this week, when he will look at all lots for the May Signature sale. So, Heritage jumped the gun and ran the ads. Remember, this is a business and they wanted to get the word out ASAP that this huge piece was in its upcoming sale. Was it bad judgment to run with the ads before Lou looked at the helmet? Maybe so, but they did and that was a business decision, but given the strong provenance, I believe it was a calculated risk and the majority of other auction houses probably would have done the same thing. Then a board member at gameusedforum.com did a photomatching to SB III and Namath and found out that it wasn’t the same helmet. Many board members crucified Heritage for promoting the piece as something it was not, but what they didn’t realize is that Lou never authenticated it and caught all the things wrong with it and many more things that the message board member didn’t even comment on in his original thread. I know some of you will say, “Yeah sure, Lou probably looked at it and couldn’t tell it wasn’t real.” Trust me. Lou was in this week and he didn’t see the helmet until now. Not many people know this, but Lou owns the Namath jersey from Super Bowl III and he is very, very familiar with this game. The knowledge that this guy has in his head, some of you would never be able to comprehend. Has Lou made mistakes in the past? Yes. But, by going nuts on an auction house for a mistake like this is not only bad for Heritage, but it is also bad for the hobby in general and board members who like to sit behind their computer and rant and rave about something like this are nothing but instigators who need to calm down. Also, I don’t know how many times I have read on the board that people want to confront a certain authenticator about a mistake that was made on a jersey or a bat and they always seem to want to try to email the person. Well, when people found out that Lou was at the National last year, not one single person came up to him and challenged him with any concerns that were mentioned on the board. Also, Lou will be on a panel at the PCCE with other authenticators to help educate collectors. And when that was called to the attention of the members of gameusedforum.com, nobody seemed to want to go to the show in Chicago to talk with Lou.I have no problem with someone who wants to call out someone on a public forum, but I do have a problem when people are just starting to cause trouble when they really don’t know the facts. I am assuming I will take some bashing for this blog, but hopefully you won’t take offense to what I wrote and you will actually agree with some points. *********** Oh yeah... before I forget. For the guy who posted the thread that said: If Heritage decides to back off the SB3 connection, I think they'll
likely still try and pass it off as a SB3-era Namath helmet. Today Lou determined that it is not a game-worn Namath helmet, but is a Jets gamer from an unknown player. The person who made the above comment is exactly starting the kind of trouble that this blog was about. Stating something as irresponsible as that is as bad as an authenticator who has no facts to base his claims when he states a jersey is authentic.
